News reports say Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has resigned. Apparently, the constitutional procedure for succession is not being followed, and instead there has been a coup.
After weathering weeks of protest, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned Friday, according to state television.
The announcement, read by Vice President Omar Suleiman, came shortly after helicopters were seen taking off from the presidential palace and reports spread that Mubarak had departed Cairo for the resort city of Sharm el Sheikh.
“President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave the office of the president of the republic and instructed the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to run the affairs of the country,” a brief statement read on state television said. “May God guide our steps.”
The armed forces do not have a constitutional role in presidential succession.
